Types of Treatment

Types of ADHD treatment offered at Lakeview Behavioral Health Hospital in Atlanta, GA

We believe that you are a key component of our treatment team and will work with you to develop a treatment plan that works for you. Most treatment plans for ADHD will involve a medication and therapeutic component working in tandem.

Medication may be used in the short-term to manage symptoms of ADHD such as restlessness and anxiety to best allow you to participate in your own care. Other people may find that medication may work best in a long-term therapeutic approach with proper medical management in place. You will work with your treatment team to ascertain what works best for you.

The most common type of medication prescribed to people who have ADHD are stimulants, as these drugs have a calming effect on individuals with ADHD. Medications are not a cure for ADHD; they simply reduce symptoms in some individuals. In addition to medication, your treatment plan will likely involve a number of our empirically validated therapeutic techniques.

Individual therapy also called “talk therapy” is used to help you identify and address problems that ADHD has caused in your life. You will likely discuss the way that problem behaviors have led to negative consequences and how best to solve these challenges. It’s likely you will also address other ways in which you can best cope with the symptoms of your ADHD.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses upon teaching you how your negative thoughts can affect your behavior and ways you can restructure these thoughts. After you’ve learned to restructure your thoughts into more constructive ways of thinking, you will begin to view the world in new ways.

Strengths-based counseling focuses on the strengths you already have deep within you and allows you to see yourself as the biggest asset to your recovery. This form of counseling seeks to empower you and allow you to build off your existing assets to allow you to create the future you want.

Group therapy is a very important part of your recovery at our ADHD treatment center near Atlanta, Georgia as it will allow you to connect with others who are facing similar challenges. Process groups often center on discussion of a theme such as a symptom management or self-esteem. Psycho-educational groups seek to teach you about medications and relapse prevention.

We know that you’re a part of a family and at our ADHD center, we want to make sure that your family and loved ones are included in your treatment. Family therapy sessions will focus on coping skills as well as explore the ways in which ADHD has affected the lives of your loved ones.

As our hospital seeks to treat the whole person, we engage a number of experiential therapies to allow you to begin healing yourself. These include:

  • Wellness and nutritional counseling
  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Recreational therapies
  • Expressive therapy
